I was always envious of my sister, Kathie...whose class got the "CUTER" veil..which was round and lacey and our class got this heart shaped frame which I did not think was very cool ....especially since we wore it in a number of processions...First Communion, Forty Hours, May Crowning.....

 Comments about May Crowning memories....

Gary Berner.....
Thank you for the May Cheer, Nancy.  You put me in the mood for a May Crowning this year.  Know of any??

 Sally Jardine....

Oh, Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today.
Queen of the angels, Queen of the May.
 Ah-vaaaaay, Ah-vaaaaaay, Ah-vaaaaay Ma-ri-aaaah.
 Ah-vaaaaay, Ah-vaaaaaay, Ah-vaaaaay Ma-re-ee-aaah.

What fun those practice days always were. We were about finished with the
textbooks, and sunny Spring days made it hard for us to sit still in the afternoons.
Guess procession practice was the best solution for us - and for the teachers, too.

Oh God! I just remembered the clickers. Click to kneel, click to rise, click to sit. LOL.

Do you think kids have that much fun in school nowadays?

Love you and and MISS you.

Wayne Nagel....

I have many spring flowers for the crown. We can make a conga line for our procession!

 Dorothy Olsen Carbonara....

Yes... in Catholic Schools. My grandkids love school. My 16 yr old Alexis a soph at St. Francis HS in Wheaton,  Alyssa, 13 yrs.  attends St. Michael in Wheaton, Nicky and Alex attend St. Walter in Roselle. Just had May Crowning yesterday with the First Communicants all dress in their finery. So beautiful! Today the Kindergarten is having a talent show; my youngest one, the 6 yr. old, is going to play scoccer  with three other boys; not his talent bu my daughter would not let not participate.  He is an hilarious hoola hooper but won't do it because his 10 year old brother told him only girls do that. They are both fabulous hockey players so I guess the hoola hoop lacks luster. Too funny!

Hope all of you are well. The other day I found a picture of Walt Williamson, David Hirsch, and Steve Snyder with Bill Veeck when he visited St. Geo. I must try to send it to Nancy. I went to the St. Therese Shrine in Darien the other day and gave all of you to her care. Happy May...stay with Our Lady, she will always, always keep you.
Love...Dorothy (Sr. M. V)

PS.. I have a May crowning with my grandkids with my BVM statue...in the kitchen.

Colette Verdun....

I remember those May crownings so well.  I was so proud in 2nd grade that we got to wear our pretty 1st Communion dresses while every other girl had to wear their blue uniforms.  And the other "procession" that I remember is walking around the block in our Halloween costumes when we were in 1st or 2nd grade.

love to all,

Colette

 Greetings all ....

Thanks to all your messages, I have had a chance to relive/remember some beautiful memories of St. George days.  Although I left there at the beginning of 6th grade, I have fond thoughts of such things as the “May Crowing” ceremonies!   Some of my Grand children are also in Catholic School in Herrin, Illinois and I am very proud of my daughter who thought enough to send them there.

Oh yes, the May Crowing was the second biggest event in May, my birthday was always fun time, with family and girl friends, sorry guys.  I also remember May as being a hot month back than for ( Illinois)  or was it the blue uniforms, and the black top that we stood on ??  But now I live in Mississippi when today was 94 deg. normal is 74 deg. ??  Thank goodness for the AC.  But I would not trade those days for anything.  Great memories and now re-connecting with great friends and their families.

 In Memoriam......

Never are we more aware of much our friends and family mean than at the time of our sadness.
Thank you for the  plant in honor of my daughter Veronica's memory.  Your thoughtfulness and
sympathy will always be gratefully remembered and deeply appreciated.  Thank you to all who
sent sympathy messages, either in cards or email.

Veronica had a beautiful military service, honor guard, 21 gun salute, B-52 flyover, the General
presented me with a flag and a medal she received for Defense Meritorious Service.  It was quite
an honor to have the fly over, the B-52 was flown by a crew who had flown with Veronica when she
was a pilot on the B-52.  She was a wonderful daughter and I am now finding out how many lives she
touched and how well loved she was.  She will be greatly missed but hopefully never forgotten.

Thank you all.

Miss Theresa

Lt. Col. Veronica J. "Vern" Hutfles

Lt. Col. Veronica J. "Vern" Hutfles

Air Force Lt. Col. Veronica J. "Vern" Hutfles, 37, of Bellevue, Nebraska, died Saturday, April 7, 2012 at her home, following a courageous seven-year battle with melanoma.

Veronica was born in Morris, Illinois on October 22, 1974, the daughter of John H. and Theresa Grotovsky Hutfles. She grew up in Seneca, Illinois and attended Seneca Grade School and High School, graduating in 1992.

After high school she entered the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, playing on the women’s varsity basketball team.  In 1996 Veronica received her Bachelor's Degree of Science in Engineering Sciences from the Air Force Academy and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

"Vern," as she was known, was selected for pilot training at Vance AFB, Oklahoma, earning her wings in December 1997. She received F-16 fighter plane training at Luke AFB in Arizona, attaining solo rating and initial qualification before transitioning to her permanent aircraft, the B-52, with training at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana.  She was then stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota.

In 2006, she completed a Master's Degree in Business Administration specializing in Aviation Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. In that same year she became a Special Actions Officer for the Air Combat Command at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia.

Veronica served as a combat B-52 bomber pilot on operational missions over Afghanistan with over 250 combat hours, before moving on to serve as Air Liaison Officer supporting the U.S. Army's National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. She served on the Air Combat Command Commander's Advisory Group before completing a fellowship at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California.  Her final assignment was on Strategic Command's Headquarters Staff at Offutt AFB, Nebraska.

Veronica was promoted to her final rank of Lieutenant Colonel on June 1, 2011, and served with honor on active duty, unhampered by her illness to the very end.

Veronica's exemplary service, personally and professionally, was chosen fordepiction in Sascha Pflaeging's book, "When Janey Comes Marching Home: Portraits of Women Combat Veterans."  The book quotes Veronica's story about a B-52 bombing run originating from the island of Diego Garcia in the Pacific, targeting a mountain pass in Afghanistan, with the mission of preventing hostile insurgents from crossing over the pass and doing battle with friendly forces.

Over her career she was decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Force Organizational Excellence Award (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Combat Readiness Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (1 Oak Leaf Cluster) and Air Force Training Ribbon.

Throughout her time in the Air Force, Vern continued her love of sports, participating in numerous intramural leagues for softball, hockey, and her favorite, basketball, as well as coaching several youth and Special Olympics basketball teams. She was a loving aunt for seven nieces and nephews, and godmother for two goddaughters, Veronica Rose Hutfles and Izabel Cabral.

She was preceded in death by her father John; and her grandparents, Ernest and Augusta Boeckman Hutfles, and James and Anna Grotovsky.

Survivors include her mother Theresa of Centralia, Kansas; three brothers, Retired Air Force Major Anthony Hutfles of San Antonio, Texas, Air Force Lt. Colonel Gary (Claire) Hutfles of Springfield, Virginia and Steven (Svetlana) Hutfles of Fredonia, Kansas; two sisters, Janet Hutfles of Overland Park, Kansas and Joanne (Cory) Hernandez of Parsons, Tennessee; nieces and nephews, Sean, Lawrence, Veronica Rose, and Eileen Hutfles, and Bryce, Ty, and Max Hernandez; and a very special friend, Dave Cardillo of Billings, Montana.

Burial will be in St. Bede's Church cemetery in Kelly, Kansas.
